Close to Home
When not tied to the desk processing images or doing other tedious office jobs that seem to take up so much of my time, I am travelling around the UK and Europe sometimes, shooting images for stock or for a commission. This usually means nights away from home, but even day trips can be to locations a couple of hours drive away. This week however, with my car in for repair after the break-in, I put off a planned trip to the Yorkshire Moors and instead concentrated on something closer to home.
The field outside the back of my house was the chosen location, where barley has grown to full height and gently sways in the breeze like the waves on the ocean. It’s a mesmerising sight and I set about capturing it at different times of the day, throughout the week. I now have a nice collection of images and proved to myself that you don’t have to travel far to get interesting pictures. Sometimes a five minute walk with the dog is as far as you need to go.

Good News, Bad News
Continuing my new relationship with The Times newspaper, another of my images has been chosen to be used in the centre section of the Saturday Travel Feature. The beautiful Tal-y-llyn in North Wales is the chosen location and a favourite tranquil image of mine too. I’ll keep you posted when it is published.
So, that’s the good news. The bad news is the day before, my car was broken into whilst out on a shoot. Smashed back window, contents all over the place and some valuables taken. I could rant about the selfish individuals who thought it was their right to help themselves to my gear, as they thought they were entitled to it more than I was, but I won’t here. I’m sure you all know how I feel, especially if you have been the victim of this type of crime yourselves. Needless to say, thank goodness for good insurance, but the inconvenience, time and arrangements for repairs, as well as inner anger, you sadly can’t insure for.

First Post
Even though I’ve always said I hate Facebook and MySpace and could never understand the popularity of Twitter (people with too much time on their hands), I am now eating my own words and decided to start a blog. Here you will find all the latest news and musings of a busy freelance photographer (with too much time on his hands!) on a more regular basis than the main News page. For now, this new blog will sit alongside the news page and that will continue to be updated on a usual two to three month basis, summarising the last quarter of my work.
As well as text based rants and diary entries, I am also thinking of including short video diaries as well. These would be shot whilst out on location with a Flip Mino HD camcorder, which I saw on QVC last night and inspired me to start this blog in the first place. This camera is small and compact and ideal for making brief journals. I could then use an adaptor to sit it on the camera hotshoe to keep it steady, whilst I record my entry and therefore also show the scene I am photographing at the time from the cameras point of view. Whether I, or other people will be able to stand my ugly mug on film (or sensor as it would be) AND in High Definition as well, on a regular basis is another matter!
